NO EXIT
Three characters meet in a secret room, which turns out to be hell. They confess their sins to one another, believing this will help them escape, but eventually realize that they are bound to each other, serving as one another’s executioners. This play is the source of Sartre’s famous, often misinterpreted statement: “Hell is other people.” The play was written in 1944.
